PAINT AGREEMENT----Mutual Assurance Society Records, Misc Records 1794-1869, Virginia State Archives, Richmond, Virginia Memorandum of an agreement entered into this 11th day of May 1837, between Geo. J. Roche of the one part and John Rutherfoord Principal Agent of the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia of the other part:-- The said Roche agrees to paint the Dwelling House owned by the said Society in a substantial and workmanlike manner, and with the best materials, and with as little delay as the nature of the work will permit, on the following terms, to wit: All the one coat work at seven cents per square yard, all the two coat work at fourteen cents per square yard, and the Imitation work at fifty cents per square yard, which work is to be paid for per measurement when the same shall have been fully and satisfactorily completed. It is further agreed that all the Painting proposed to be done, as herein after specified, shall not exceed the sum of one hundred and ninety three dollars, even tho in a measurement of the work it shall be found at the prices above mentioned to exceed that sum; that is to say--two coats to all the exterior wood work of the House, including the two porches and the floors and steps of the same, and one coat to each pair of Venetian Shutters and Doors, for a sum not exceeding the sum of One Hundred Dollars $100. One coat to all the wood work in the Second Story, the doors whereof are to be mahogany Imitation, not to exceed the sum of Eighteen Dollars $18.00 Two coats to the Principal Story and Passage and Staircase and the Painted Walls in the large Dining Room and in the Passage running up into the Second Story, and the Cellar Dining Room; and one coat on all the wood work in the cellar or Basement Story; the doors in the Principal Story to be in imitation of Mahogany, Oak, or some other fancy colour, as may be determined on --the outside of the Doors exposed to the weather to be of Green, all for the sum not exceeding Seventy-five Dollars. $75. Making in all $193.00 It is further agreed in the part of the Roche that he will scrape and whiten all the ceilings of the Principal Story, whitewash the Second Story where the walls thereof are not covered with paint or paper--Repair all the Plaistering about the house and porches which require it, and whitewash the whole of the Basement or Cellar Story, and put in bricks and point the walls thereof wherever the same may be necessary, and repair the cills and put in new bricks to the steps leading from the yard to the cellar, all for a Sum not exceeding Twenty Dollars, making for the whole Job, the sum of Two hundred and Thirteen Dollars-- The said Roche further agrees to furnish and put in such glass as may be necessary at the price of fourteen center for each light-- And the Said J. Rutherfoord, as principal Agent for the Said Society, agrees to pay Mr. Roche for the work herein before mentioned, on the terms agreed on, where the same shall have been finished according to contract-- In witness whereof, we have hereto subscribed our names this 11th day of May 1837.
