  CHARLOTTESVILLE     Albemarle County (2)

University of Virginia (VA-193), S of intersection of University Ave. and Rugby Rd. The Rotunda: brick (Flemish bond), circular, 77' in meter (five-bay front), with esplanades extending from either side of N and S fronts, two stories above high basement with attic, domed roof, two-story pedimented Corinthian porticoes on N and S fronts, corinthian enlature surrounding entire structure at top of second story, cornice surrounding top of attic; one-room plan, domed room encircled by Corinthian colonnade supporting enlature, two galleries behind colonnade. Begun 1823, completed 1826, Thomas Jefferson, architect; original building destroyed by fire 1895, only brick walls survived; structure as it exists today is the result of the rebuilding (1898-1902) by Stanford White, architect; White's departures from Jefferson's original design include the addition of the N portico, the N esplanades, the E and W colonnades, and the present arrangement of interior. Jefferson's interior consisted of two floors rather than one, with center hall and three oval rooms on the first floor, a circular domed library on the second containing a circular composite colonnade. Two-story annex with Corinthian portico to N front of Rotunda 1853, Robert Mills, architect; destroyed in fire of 1895. Perpendicular to the S front of the Rotunda are four ranges of brick buildings. The two inner ranges each consist of five, two-story pavilions connected by one-story Tuscan colonnades, behind which are individual student rooms. The pavilions vary in design, and each displays one of the three principal orders of Roman architecture. Each was designed to contain a classroom on the first floor, a faculty apartment on the second, an kitchen and service area in the basement. The two outer ranges of buildings each consist of three "Hotels" or dining halls with basement kitchens and service areas. The Hotels are connected by one-story arcades behind which are additional student rooms. Gardens enclosed by serpentine walls placed between the inner and outer ranges of buildings. Together with the Rotunda, this complex of structures formed the original portion of the University of Virginia as designed by Thomas Jefferson. This "Academical Village" served as the prototype for many institutions of higher learning in the United States. The four ranges of buildings were erected 1817-26. In spite of renovations, alterations, and additions, the basic concept and much of the original fabric survive intact. The Rotunda is currently (1974) undergoing restoration to the Jefferson design. 12 ext. photos, including details of pavilions, ranges, and serpentine walls (1933, 1937). NR; NHL
